The Ions fight to learn the cause of. and find a control for this once mys terious trouble has apparently end ed with the announcement by veterinarians ct Oregon State eol lege that they have succeeded in finding a practical and economical method of producing immunity. Last year it was announced jointly by men of the state college staff and practicing veterinarians that the use of the already famous drug, sulfanilamide, would cure the (iisease even when it reached fairly advanced stages. Shaw, head of the de partment of veterinary medicine, anti C. H. Howarth, instructor in the department, have made a de tailed re|K>rt of these findings to a scientific medical journal. hr. Shaw points out that this method of producing i mmunity would seem Io he espeeialh practical for owners of work dogs such as re trievers, hounds and stock dogs, as it would he possible to bring about immunity before money, time ami energy are expended on training. It would also be useful to owners of dogs that must 1 m - taken on fish ing and camping trips. This drug is not considered safe for use by laymen hut the treat ment can be administered at rea sonable coal by a practicing vet erinarian. Some years age the scientists nt Oregon State c< liege were the first to discover that salmon poisoning is caused by an internal parasit* which infests trout and salmon af ter they reach the fresh water of Pacific coast streams. A native snail is an alternate host for this parasite. A method of producing immunity by administering blood serum was worked out but was considered loo expensive for gen eral use. The sulfanilamide treat ment now overcomes that diffi culty. Itocal veterinarians renort the successful use of this new cure in the course of experiments during the past year. P .W .A .
